“AGHDRA. By Arthur Jafa (review)”

Shanks reviews Arthur Jafa’s latest film installation, AGHDRA. In it, she argues that an extended spatial analysis of the film—that links its visuals to the gallery and its neighborhood—is constitutive of the filmic work itself. By staying with the horizon line that anchors the upper third of each frame in the film, Shanks articulates installation art as a practice always already embedded within an intersectional interplay between site and body, political possibility and spatial autonomy.

“The Space of the Encounter: An Interview with Sharon Hayes”

In an interview with contemporary artist Sharon Hayes, Shanks invites Hayes to discuss how she makes sense of space, time, and the re-circulation, or distribution, of ideas and histories in her artistic practice.
